Exposed Aggregate, Honed and Burnished Concrete Driveways for Lake Macquarie Homes

A driveway is often the first large surface people see at a new build or a major renovation, so we treat it as part of the landscape design rather than a slab poured at the end. We build exposed aggregate driveways using washed river pebble and decorative stone blends. We also lay honed concrete, ground back to show the stone through a smooth, refined face, and burnished concrete, steel-trowelled to a tight, polished-looking finish for covered areas and entertaining spaces. Every pour starts with the same groundwork: excavation, a compacted road base, reinforcement mesh sized to the load, and formwork set to falls that move water where it needs to go.

Conditions around the lake shape how we build. Heavy summer storms and east coast lows can send a lot of water across a sloping block quickly, so we plan grated drains, strip drains and stormwater connections before any concrete arrives. Salt air on waterfront and coastal properties, together with humid, shaded corners where mould and lichen take hold, is why we pick sealers and aggregate finishes that stay grippy and easy to clean. Soils vary from sandy coastal ground to reactive clay further inland, and that affects base depth, reinforcement and where we cut control joints to manage cracking.

Many of our concrete projects form part of a larger scope. A new exposed aggregate driveway might lead to a sandstone entry path, or a honed concrete pool surround might connect to a deck and pergola. We often combine concrete with retaining walls on steep lakefront sites, and with paving and natural stone where travertine or sandstone suits a feature area better. One team manages the levels, drainage and finishes across the whole job, so every surface meets cleanly and drains properly.

How We Build Exposed Aggregate and Honed Concrete Driveways

From site levels and drainage through to saw-cut joints and sealing

Step 1: Site Levels, Drainage Design and Excavation

We survey the site, set finished levels against the house slab and garage, and plan falls so water runs away from the building. Then we excavate to the required depth, removing soft or reactive material where the soil calls for it.

Step 2: Road Base, Formwork and Reinforcement

We spread road base and compact it in layers with a plate compactor. Timber or steel formwork goes in to define edges and curves. Reinforcement mesh sits on bar chairs so it stays in the middle of the slab during the pour.

Step 3: Pouring, Screeding and Finishing the Surface

Concrete is placed, screeded to level and bull-floated. For exposed aggregate, we apply a surface retarder and wash back the top layer to reveal the stone. Honed and burnished finishes get machine grinding or power trowelling once the slab reaches the right stage of set.

Step 4: Control Joints, Curing and Sealing

We saw-cut control joints at planned spacings so any shrinkage cracking follows a straight line. The slab cures before it takes traffic, and the timing depends on the mix and the weather. Once it has cured, we clean it and apply a sealer suited to the finish and exposure.

What a Well-Built Decorative Concrete Driveway Gives Your Home

Better drainage, a cohesive look and easier upkeep in lakeside conditions

Water Moves Off the Driveway, Not Into the Garage

Planned falls and integrated drains carry storm runoff away from the house, garage and pool area. That means less pooling, fewer slippery patches and less risk of water working under the slab during heavy summer downpours.

A Surface That Suits the Rest of Your Landscape

Aggregate colour, stone size and finish are chosen to suit your render, cladding, paving and planting. The driveway looks like it belongs with the house and garden instead of standing out as a plain grey slab.

Grip and Easy Upkeep in Salt Air and Humidity

Exposed aggregate keeps a textured, grippy face even when it is damp. The right sealer reduces staining from oil, leaf litter and mould, so a garden hose and a stiff broom handle most cleaning.

Decorative Concrete Built for Lake Macquarie Sites and Soils

Concrete Designed as Part of the Whole Landscape

We plan driveways alongside retaining walls, pool surrounds, decks and planting, so levels and finishes work together. You deal with one team managing the full scope instead of coordinating separate trades.

Drainage Planned Before the First Pour

Lake Macquarie storms can move a lot of water across sloping and lakefront blocks. We design falls, strip drains and stormwater connections at the start, because fixing drainage after the concrete has set is costly and disruptive.

Groundwork Matched to Your Soil

Sandy coastal sites and inland clay need different base and reinforcement approaches. We assess the ground and build the sub-base to suit it, which is where long-lasting concrete starts.

Finishes Chosen for Coastal and Humid Conditions

We select aggregate, finishing methods and sealers that hold up to salt air, shade, leaf litter and wet weather. The aim is a driveway that stays safe underfoot and simple to keep clean.

Decorative Concrete and Driveway Questions from Lake Macquarie Homeowners

Common questions answered

Is exposed aggregate or honed concrete better for a sloping driveway in Lake Macquarie?

On steep driveways we usually recommend exposed aggregate because its textured stone face gives better grip when wet. Honed concrete is smoother and suits flatter areas, covered entries and pool surrounds where we can add a slip-resistant sealer. We assess the grade and how the area is used before recommending a finish.

How long before we can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Foot traffic is usually fine fairly soon, but vehicles need to wait longer while the slab gains strength. The exact timing depends on the concrete mix, the weather and the slab thickness. We give you clear guidance on the day of the pour and before any heavy vehicles or trades return to site.

What affects the cost of a decorative concrete driveway?

The main factors are size, site access, how much excavation and base work the soil needs, drainage requirements and the finish you choose. Removing an old driveway, steep grades and premium aggregate blends all add to the scope. We price each job after a site visit so the quote reflects your actual block.

Will my concrete crack on clay soil?

All concrete can crack as it shrinks, and reactive clay moves with wet and dry cycles. We manage this with proper base preparation, correctly placed reinforcement and control joints cut where cracks are most likely. That way, any movement follows the joints instead of running randomly across the slab.

How often should a decorative concrete driveway be resealed near the lake?

It depends on the sealer type, sun exposure and traffic, and salt air and humidity can shorten the interval on waterfront sites. A good sign it is due is when water stops beading on the surface or the colour looks dull and dry. We can advise on the right product and schedule for your finish.
